Historical attractions in Windsor

St George's Chapel in Windsor, England, is one of the most significant historical and religious landmarks in Britain. This magnificent Gothic chapel is located within the walls of Windsor Castle, the oldest continuously inhabited royal residence in the world, and has served as the spiritual center of the British monarchy for centuries. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, it is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and a place of great cultural and historical significance, closely linked to the history of English kings and queens.

Gothic architecture of St George’s Chapel

The chapel was founded in 1348 by King Edward III when he established the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most prestigious order of knights in England. St George's Chapel has since been the spiritual home of this order, and the annual Order of the Garter ceremony takes place here, where knights gather in their traditional blue robes and feathered hats. However, the construction of the current structure did not begin until 1475 under King Edward IV, who replaced the original, smaller chapel with a larger, more lavish building. The work was completed under subsequent monarchs, particularly Henry VII and Henry VIII.

Fan vaulting of the chapel

Architecturally, the chapel is distinguished by its delicate Gothic construction. The impressive fan vaulting of the ceiling, a highlight of Perpendicular Gothic architecture, is a stone masterpiece with complex patterns that captivate the eye. The large, colorful stained glass windows flood the interior with light and tell biblical stories as well as the history of the Order of the Garter. Particularly striking is the West Window, one of the largest medieval stained glass windows in England, depicting scenes from the life of St. George, the chapel's patron saint.

Burial site of British monarchs

St George's Chapel is also known as the burial place of numerous monarchs. Here rest King Henry VIII, his third wife Jane Seymour, King Charles I, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II, who was interred here in 2022. The graves are often simple but of great historical significance, and many are located in the Royal Vault or in special chapels within the building, such as the Albert Memorial Chapel, originally built for Queen Victoria. This connection to royal history makes the chapel a place of remembrance and reflection.

Choir traditions of St George’s Chapel

Another highlight is the chapel choir, whose intricately carved choir stalls bear the banners and coats of arms of the current Knights of the Order of the Garter. The choir is not only an architectural gem but also known for its musical tradition. The St George's Chapel Choir, consisting of boys and adult singers, regularly sings at services and contributes to the spiritual atmosphere with Gregorian chants and classical church music.

The chapel has also played a central role in modern history. It has been the venue for numerous royal weddings, including that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, as well as Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in the same year. These globally broadcast events have once again brought the chapel into the spotlight and emphasized its significance as a place of national and international importance.

In addition to its religious and historical function, St George's Chapel is a place of peace and beauty. The interior radiates a solemn silence, enhanced by the intricate details – such as the stone angels on the walls or the delicate ironwork. Visitors can explore the chapel as part of a visit to Windsor Castle, often impressed by the combination of grandeur and intimacy that sets this place apart.

Shame on you. Would the faith that was just hosted with welcoming arms allow us to do a Christian session within their walls? NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST. Horrific turn of events, queen Elizabeth will be turning in her grave.

Came here for a visit whilst in Windsor castle. So much history both old and new. Very moving when you see Queen Elizabeth II's final resting place. Don't wear a hat inside (I completely forgot and was reminded to take it off). No photos allowed inside.
